Комментируя номинирование Владимира Буковского на эту награду, Томас Сас заявил:

Буковский в большей степени, чем другие получатели этой награды, испытал на себе жестокость и беззаконие психиатрического принуждения. Более того, он с выдающимся мужеством и красноречием разоблачил то, что называют «политическими злоупотреблениями» психиатрией, — практику, которую я и многие из нас считают неотъемлемой от каждого случая психиатрического применения силы, вне зависимости от того, какие «медицинские» оправдания при этом приводятся. Я приветствую колоссальный вклад Владимира Буковского в пробуждение мировой общественности касательно опасностей психиатрической власти.

Оригинальный текст (англ.)   Bukovsky, more than any other recipient of these Awards so far, has experienced first hand the brutality and injustice of psychiatric coercion. Moreover, he has denounced, with great courage and eloquence, what is usually called the “political abuse” of psychiatry, a practice I and many of us consider intrinsic to every and all use of psychiatric force, regardless of alleged “medical” justifications for it. I salute Vladimir Bukovsky for his enormous contribution to alerting the world to the dangers of psychiatric power.
